How to care for yourself when helping a loved one on their palliative care journey

Caring for a loved one through a very challenging time can be one of the most difficult and special things you could ever do.

Self care

Maintaining your own self care can be easily dismissed for other tasks. Take time to eat, shower, brush your teeth and sleep. These are essential to ensure you do not suffer from burn out.

Share the load

Give friends and family tasks to assist you and your loved one. People are more than happy to help in any way. Make a list and divide out the essential tasks such as shopping, cooking, cleaning and laundry. This will give you the headspace to care for your loved one by not having these additional worries.

Interactions with medical professionals

Your loved one may need support in communicating with medical teams who are involved with their care. Bring along a notebook to these interactions and don’t be afraid to ask questions. If you need additional guidance on matters do ensure to link in with the social work department who may be able to point you in

the right direction of the support you may require.
